What kind of entertainment can be energy efficient?

I am doing a project in my environmental class at school and we have to research different kinds of entertainment and recreations that are green and energy efficient and that leave a very small amount of CO2 emissions and a smaller carbon footprint, but they have to be appealing to teenagers. I know that there are activities like biking and hiking, but is there anything else?

Habitat restoration and organic gardening come to mind. Habitat restoration, preservation, or conservation is probably a bit more in line with “teen interest” but, I think that is starting to change a bit.

I would vote for pretty much anything that uses predominately human/teen energy, re-usable equipment with durability, possibly re-used or re-purposed materials and supplies, and requires little additional energy. For example, playing soccer or a different sport might fit the bill. But, if playing soccer requires a lot of driving to get to practice or games, it has a larger CO2 footprint than kicking the ball between a couple of people at the end of a caul-da-sac. For example, if walking and biking to the local park to play a game of softball were possible, then the CO2 impact would be in the maintenance required for the actual ball park being played in. For example, the school foot ball game has a given CO2 footprint but, if field lights are required for a night game the CO2 footprint quickly increases. – In part it is the activity its self but, more so how the activity is conducted that determines its environmental impact.

Another whole set of activities with a bunch of CO2 and other environmental impact equations are re-use and re-purposing activities. Before there were video games and the TV shows did not particularly take teen interests into account until after the evening news – a number of teens took interest in developing their skills in a number of crafts and arts. Because their budgets were limited and parent’s didn’t particularly take to providing nothing but the best in terms of supplies, materials, and tools – “kids” became excellent at using bits, pieces, scrap, and “used junk” in their projects. Wood, metal, fabric, paper – you name it, kids used it and in doing so learned an arsenal of skills that enable the re-use and re-purposing of other’s waste or scrap. Hand carving a scrap of wood or using materials from a previously worn garment in a hand sewing project certainly has less of a CO2 or enviornmental impact than planing down used boards to make furniture, using a hot glue gun, or a mega-watt sewing machine. At the same time, these activities use and make less of a CO2 impact than say hot-rodding down a race track.

If CO2 emissions and environmental footprint are the issue, one could make the argument that playing video games enables a much smaller footprint than even going to and hanging out at the mall; even smaller than using the transportation required to plant a tree and the tree’s ensuing carbon off-set. Again, it pretty much depends upon the circumstances, the actual activity’s requirements, and how it is done.
