Green version of peace corps?

I am a college freshmen finishing up his first year. Lately i have really gotten in the green movement. I am really dissatisfied with my life right now and would wish to explore working with green energy. Is there a program like the peace corps that goes around the country and maybe the world working on green projects(installing, maintaining, operating solar panels wind turbines etc) If there is can someone please give me the info as i would be really egar to learn more.

No, the best you are going to do is probably “Habitat for Humanity” But you might approach Amory Lovins organization, the Rocky Mountain Institute. Alternatively you could try to get a job with someone who is installing such things. Search for someone to install as if you wanted it on your house and approach they for employment. Labor for low wages works wonders. If you wanted to work on the cutting edge try Sandia labs. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/11/041110163722.htm And there are many other companies, but this is not your usual job search. You are going to have to dig a little and make some effort to find what you want. You may receive many rejections but you will have to keep going if the goal is worth while to you.

Look for more using a search on “green volunteering.”

Regarding your present aimlessness, it is comforting when we can find a purpose to our lives early, but I think this is unusual. We live in a society where we are encouraged to seek enjoyment and distraction rather than dedication or focus. Eventually many feel that family and/or situations or things will be satisfying to them. Others continue seeking for much longer. It is probably the unique individual that even eventually finds the true purpose to their lives. Good luck to you.

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project

$120

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project is a case study that aims to profile best practices for sustainable development, indigenous human rights, and conflict resolution. In 2003, a joint project was developed between the United Nations University of Peace and the International Peace and Conflict Resolution program at Arcadia University to study the Boruca hydroelectrical conflict in Costa Rica. The aim was to bring together theory and practice and to reveal the link between peace and conflict resolution and sustainable development. Through partnerships with the Kan Tan Ecological Project and the indigenous communities in the region, and field studies to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and local Civil Society Organizations, faculty and students utilized the mediation framework to identify the needs and interests of the primary conflict stakeholders. Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project represents the culmination of this fieldwork and tests the mediation framework as suitable model for the resolution of environmental conflicts in Latin America. The Boruca project, proposed in the 1970s by the state-run corporation Instituto Costarricense De Electridad (ICE), will build a dam in the Boruca Canyon, changing the flow of the Térraba River and creating an artificial lake of 25.000 hectares. The largest of its kind in Central America, this project will generate approximately 1,500 megawatts and increase Costa Rica’s energy production capability by as much as 50%. For ICE, not only will the project satisfy national electrical demand, it will also stimulate economic growth, assist in the development of new technological corridors and new tourism projects, increase employment opportunities, and improve the quality of life for indigenous peoples living in Boruca area. For the indigenous population, however, the project represents a violation of their fundamental human rights since it will force the relocation of 2,000 to 3,000 indigenous peoples, flood areas of archeological and cultural significance to them, and affect their livelihood due to the resulting changes in the biodiversity. They also fear the social and environmental impacts of more tourism in the area. The increasingly dysfunctional communication between the Boruca people and ICE over the past 30 years has led to a breakdown of trust and a stalling of the project’s development. Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project   follows these conflicts and the process by which the government-owned utility tried to find common ground between all stakeholders. Ultimately, it tests the mediation framework as an appropriate approach to the resolution of development conflicts, exploring the transferability of this approach to other countries in Latin America. This case study provides unique insights into Latin American environmental and development politics and will be of interest to any student, faculty, or policymaker looki

Public Procurement of Energy Efficiency Services

Public Procurement of Energy Efficiency Services

$19.99

This book looks at a largely untapped energy efficiency market, the public sector. Efficiency potential in this sector is substantial, but implementing energy savings programs have been complicated by a number of factors, including limited incentives to lower energy costs, rigid budgeting and procurement procedures, and limited access to financing. This book looks at energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) as a means of overcoming some of these barriers in public facilities, since they can outsource the full project cycle to a commercial service provider. ESPCs allow public agencies to solicit various technical solutions, mobilize commercial financing, and assign performance risk to third parties, allowing them to pay from a project’s actual energy savings. The findings stem from case studies that identified approaches, models and specific solutions to ESPC procurement, including budgeting, energy audits, and bid evaluation. Such an approach also offers enormous potential to bundle, finance and implement energy efficiency projects on a larger scale in the public sector, which can yield further economies of scale.ESPCs can also serve as an attractive element for fiscal stimulus packages and efforts by governments to “green” their infrastructure, which can create local jobs, reduce future operating costs, and mitigate their carbon footprint. Lower energy bills, in turn, helps to create fiscal space in future years to meet other critical investment priorities. And, this can help stimulate local markets for energy efficiency goods and services and “lead by example,” demonstrating good practices and providing models to the private sector.
