FORSTA FILTERS SAVE WATER AND ENERGY: HELP PROJECTS EARN GREEN CERTIFICATIONS

Engineers responsible for new construction across industrial, municipal and agricultural sectors are striving to comply with standards set forth by such organizations as the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).  Through LEED, the green building certification program, projects and buildings are rated according to their impact on priority environmental issues including water savings, energy efficiency, and materials selection.

Forsta self cleaning water filters reduce water use, improve energy efficiency and are made entirely from sustainable materials.  Implementing a Forsta Filter in new construction as well as to improve old systems will help projects meet a variety of important environmental and sustainability goals, and where applicable earn LEED certification.

Author of the 2009 Greenbuild Report, Brian Libby explains that water usage and most applications involving water are intertwined with the built environment.  “It turns out the vast majority of the water we use [In the United States] goes to cooling power plants. It’s a great example of the connection between water and energy”  Libby says quoting Peter Gleick, one of the world’s foremost experts on water resources, and author of the biennial series, The World’s Water.

Forsta self cleaning water filters are ideal for cooling power plants where they control particulate levels, protect heat exchangers, condenser tubes and other water-cooled process equipment.  By controlling particulate levels, Forsta’s fully automatic filters will improve operating efficiency, minimize downtime for cleaning and repair, limit the cost of water treatment and improve equipment lifespan.

Compared to other filter technologies Forsta’s self-cleaning water filters are more cost-effective, automatic, produce less wastewater, and will not interrupt a system’s water flow during its short cleaning cycle.  Forsta prides itself on sustainability and sets forth a comprehensive social mission to:

Make freshwater more available by reducing, recycling and reusing water in industrial, municipal and irrigation systems. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy efficiency.  Reduce waste generation and hazardous materials exposure through responsible filtration and effluent treatment.

In 2007 The USGBC published a project profile for the platinum certified building: Sidwell Friends Middle School in Washington D.C. where water management and effective use of filtration took center stage.   The profile explained that, “Smart water management is central to the project design… Treated water is eventually reused in the toilets and cooling towers. Students grow vegetables and herbs for the cafeteria on the green roofs, which also sequester rainwater and reduce stormwater runoff. Excess water flows to the courtyard’s pond and rain garden. Filters and swales incorporated into the landscape purify rainwater falling on the site. No potable water is used for irrigation.”

Forsta Filters’ Director of Sales Polly Stenberg is passionate about helping new projects save water and energy, and achieve platinum LEED certification like the Sidwell school.  ”In many applications, water needs to be filtered from its original source, at least to some extent, in order to be effective.  Once water has been used, there is also the considerable question of how to treat and/or reuse polluted wastewater in such a way as to ensure the health of people and the environment.  Increasingly, projects have water conservation targets, and conservation experts to help implement new systems.”  It is Stenberg’s goal to encourage companies to take advantage of Forsta’s water and energy efficient filters.  Forsta is currently offering a Water Stewardship Discount on all projects implementing filters to improve efficiency.

The nation is gripped by the shocking crimes: “good kids” who are suddenly, inexplicably lethal, shooting their classmates before fatally turning their guns on themselves. When Connecticut mom Dr. Lexi Bradley gets the call that her son Juan has become one of those shooters, her life is turned upside down. Ten years ago, Secret Service agent Bryan Atwood became an expert on school violence. Now the nightmare is back. Just as he is assigned to this new rash of killings, an MRI of Juan’s brain reveals what must be pure science fiction. With Lexi’s help, Bryan is determined to unearth the truth before more children die, but investigating a cross-country trail of buried horrors casts them both into a dangerous world where corporate greed can lead to sudden death.

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project

$120

Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project is a case study that aims to profile best practices for sustainable development, indigenous human rights, and conflict resolution. In 2003, a joint project was developed between the United Nations University of Peace and the International Peace and Conflict Resolution program at Arcadia University to study the Boruca hydroelectrical conflict in Costa Rica. The aim was to bring together theory and practice and to reveal the link between peace and conflict resolution and sustainable development. Through partnerships with the Kan Tan Ecological Project and the indigenous communities in the region, and field studies to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and local Civil Society Organizations, faculty and students utilized the mediation framework to identify the needs and interests of the primary conflict stakeholders. Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project represents the culmination of this fieldwork and tests the mediation framework as suitable model for the resolution of environmental conflicts in Latin America. The Boruca project, proposed in the 1970s by the state-run corporation Instituto Costarricense De Electridad (ICE), will build a dam in the Boruca Canyon, changing the flow of the Térraba River and creating an artificial lake of 25.000 hectares. The largest of its kind in Central America, this project will generate approximately 1,500 megawatts and increase Costa Rica’s energy production capability by as much as 50%. For ICE, not only will the project satisfy national electrical demand, it will also stimulate economic growth, assist in the development of new technological corridors and new tourism projects, increase employment opportunities, and improve the quality of life for indigenous peoples living in Boruca area. For the indigenous population, however, the project represents a violation of their fundamental human rights since it will force the relocation of 2,000 to 3,000 indigenous peoples, flood areas of archeological and cultural significance to them, and affect their livelihood due to the resulting changes in the biodiversity. They also fear the social and environmental impacts of more tourism in the area. The increasingly dysfunctional communication between the Boruca people and ICE over the past 30 years has led to a breakdown of trust and a stalling of the project’s development. Conflict Resolution of the Boruca Hydro-Energy Project   follows these conflicts and the process by which the government-owned utility tried to find common ground between all stakeholders. Ultimately, it tests the mediation framework as an appropriate approach to the resolution of development conflicts, exploring the transferability of this approach to other countries in Latin America. This case study provides unique insights into Latin American environmental and development politics and will be of interest to any student, faculty, or policymaker looki

The Parent Project

The Parent Project

$19.2

Involving parents in their children’s schooling is a matter of intense concern in North America. Teachers and administrators want to construct a program that creates positive involvement. This is especially critical for Chapter I schools that are mandated to use a portion of their funds for home-and-school programs. Jim Vopat believes that parental involvement should strengthen the link between home and school, and to achieve this goal parents need to be introduced to the revitalized school classroom. The Parent Project calls on the most powerful aspects of school reform–workshops, journals, cooperative groups, shared reading, agenda building, interviewing, goal setting, and critical thinking-classroom learning strategies experienced by children every day. When parents work with these strategies, they understand them and discover how to support them. Using a workshop/process model, parents become involved with their children’s classroom activities and are thus empowered to support their children’s education. These workshops ensure participant ownership of a program’s overall agenda while providing long-term structures for support and continued development. The Parent Project: Provides a framework for implementing ways to get parents involved and informed.; Was developed in urban bilingual school settings and includes workshop formats in Spanish and English.; Is a complete source-book for teaches and principals that provides materials for conducting workshops with parents in areas of writing, reading, self-esteem, and community-building.; Supports your efforts with a detailed description of what the workshop approach is and how it functions.

Public Procurement of Energy Efficiency Services

Public Procurement of Energy Efficiency Services

$19.99

This book looks at a largely untapped energy efficiency market, the public sector. Efficiency potential in this sector is substantial, but implementing energy savings programs have been complicated by a number of factors, including limited incentives to lower energy costs, rigid budgeting and procurement procedures, and limited access to financing. This book looks at energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) as a means of overcoming some of these barriers in public facilities, since they can outsource the full project cycle to a commercial service provider. ESPCs allow public agencies to solicit various technical solutions, mobilize commercial financing, and assign performance risk to third parties, allowing them to pay from a project’s actual energy savings. The findings stem from case studies that identified approaches, models and specific solutions to ESPC procurement, including budgeting, energy audits, and bid evaluation. Such an approach also offers enormous potential to bundle, finance and implement energy efficiency projects on a larger scale in the public sector, which can yield further economies of scale.ESPCs can also serve as an attractive element for fiscal stimulus packages and efforts by governments to “green” their infrastructure, which can create local jobs, reduce future operating costs, and mitigate their carbon footprint. Lower energy bills, in turn, helps to create fiscal space in future years to meet other critical investment priorities. And, this can help stimulate local markets for energy efficiency goods and services and “lead by example,” demonstrating good practices and providing models to the private sector.
